Wawayanda Mine

The Wawayanda Mine is located in Wawayanda state park. The mine operated between 1846 and 1891 and featured many shafts and a 340 foot tunnel. The tunnel now lies underwater, the shafts mostly collapsed, and much remains a mystery as nature reclaims and flattens mans disturbances. It was hard to visualize the operations while you walked through the dense forest which hasn't seen activity in over 100 years. Park rangers have also made attempted to cover up any dangerous entrances and fill many cuts.

The ore that was pulled from the Wawayanda mine was smelted at the Wawayanda furnace, the furnace is still visible and is one of the last remaining mining artifacts in Sussex NJ.
