Silver Mine (Snook Mine)
The Snook Mine, also
known as the Silver Mine is located in the mountains of Sussex County. It was
a silver bearing mine which its proprietor John Snook, discovered back in the 1880's. Mr Snook pulled out less then a ton of silver from a 9x3 shaft in the middle
of what is now Stokes State Forest. Fortunately for him he was paid 75 dollars
a pound!
Today it is flooded and grated, with no
traces of silver to be found.
Much mining was
attempted in Stokes during the last 100 or so years. Traces of mining
activity, ruins of a damn, and even a crude sewage system can be seen while
traversing the silver mine trail. The natural beauty restored where in a place
where man once consumed resources.
