Pochuk Mine
The Pochuk Mine is a
limonite mine in Vernon NJ. It was active back in the 1830's as an open cut.
The limonite ore being very unique to the area. The mine was worked on and off
during the 1800's and then was refurbished back in the late 1860's. By 1872, a
tunnel was put through the mountain to obtain access to the Sussex Railroad.
The tunnel was a gravity fed spurline which ended up exiting somewhere on
route 94. The entrance to the tunnel is no longer open, but can be seen
clearly in the vacinity of the mine. The mine today is a flooded pit with much
trash thrown into it.
