Layton Mine

The Layton Mine is a small mine along the edge of the NJ/NY border in Vernon NJ. The mine was opened in 1878 and was worked sporadically until 1882, when operations ran for ayear straight.  During a 1900 geological inspection, the mine was found to have recent explorations, with 3 relatively new shafts in place. One of them noted as being 128 feet deep. Its uncertain how much if any ore was mined at this local.

The mine eluded me for some time, taking 4 visits to find. The reason being, modern maps had the mine listed in the wrong location, placing it about .5 miles from where it actually was.

The inspection below was conducted in December of 2005, with much snow cover concealing clues to what was once there. Another field visit will be conducted in spring.
