ABM Logo Furnace Mine

The Furnace mine was the center of Franklin NJ in the late 1700's early 1800's. Franklin was actually called Franklin Furnace. The furnace mine had a shaft right in front of the furnace, the ore was raised up and smelted right there, no shipping needed. By the late 1800's the furnace was in ruins.

The shaft had a depth of 190.

Today the location is now  a park, and the shaft is covered by a memorial to something other then the Franklin furnace or the mine. Its ironic how its now a water fountain, right where the mine shaft was. I have never seen any mention of the mine being beneath the water fountain, but if you look at the pictures below, the old mine shaft is in the foreground of the old picture, compare the backgrounds with the old and the new.

Look closely at the foreground of the old picture, you will see the shaft fenced in..

I was a little weary standing on top of what was once a 190 foot verit
