ABM Logo Elizabeth Mine in Mount Hope NJ

The Elizabeth Mine is part of the Mount Hope group of mines located in Rockaway NJ. The Mount Hope Mines altogether rank as the largest producer of Iron ore in the state of NJ. The mines final operation ceased around 1950.

The shaft you see below has traditionally been called the Painter shaft, however some experts have  revealed that it is actually the Elizabeth hoisting shaft.

Either way, the shaft is over 370 feet deep. See the video of the boulder being dropped down, listen to how long it takes to hit the bottom..
