Canistear Mine
The Canistear was worked from 1870 to 1880 and
was then abandoned. The area is hauntingly beautiful. remains of th pits and
shafts did not appear to be deep during our visit, but they must be as in 1879 over 10,000 tons of ore was raised. The site has foundation
ruins, 4 water filled shafts, and is nestled off of Canistear road in Vernon,
NJ.
