ABM Logo Schofield Mine

The Schofield Mine was well worked throughout the 1800's. Its underground passages going over 400 feet below the surface. the mine was reported to be in almost continuous operation for over 50 years.

The Schofield mine was connected down below with the Ford Mine (its neighbor 200 feet away), the Iron vein mined separately at the top, connecting below ground at a depth of around 200 feet.

The mine now appears as a deep cut along side Weldon Road, by the amount, and age of debris along the edges, you can tell it was a dumping ground back in the  late 50's. The water now masks the great effort put in to mine iron ore from the earth over 150 years ago.  From the literature available on this mine, there is reported to be  more Iron ore left.

One day maybe, it will be mined again.

The main shaft looking southwest..

A person provides scale to the vast size of the mine workings. What you see here is only a fraction of what is below..

This open cut presumably went down over 300 feet..
